Bonkers about Conkers

Young members of the 1st St Mary’s Kestrels Kippax Scout Group have been beavering away in the last few weeks collecting no fewer than 7,529 conkers. But the mammoth haul wasn’t amassed simply for use in the traditional children’s game of the same name.

Around 50 beavers, cubs and scouts from the 1st St Mary’s group instead spent one evening earlier this week on the trail of a place in the record books.

They recently discovered that the record for the largest number of conkers threaded onto a single line stood at 5,000.

Acting on the advice of the scouting movement’s founder, Robert Baden-Powell, they then got themselves prepared for a shot at the title with conker-collecting outings to woods in and around Kippax.

And hopes are high that the resulting threading marathon at St Mary’s Church in Allerton Bywater has earned them one of the world’s more unusual records.

All 7,529 conkers were successfully placed on a 160-metre-long piece of string during a three-and-a-half hour operation carried out with near-military precision.

Their efforts were scrutinised by two independent adjudicators and were also videoed. The resulting tape has now been sent off to be checked by the official Guinness records team to see if the feat does qualify as a world-best.
