Join our growing, curious, fun and playful Squirrels!
What are Squirrels?
Jump into Squirrels, the latest chapter in our Scouts story. A place where 4 and 5 year olds can join in the fun for the first time.
These early years are amazing. Minds are fizzing, energy and curiosity levels are sky high. This is the time to fill little ones’ lives with wow and wonder, to set them climbing the tree – and who knows how far they’ll reach?
We tell stories and play games. Get active and explore the outdoors. Encourage asking ‘why’.
Fall down and get back up again. Squirrels laugh and learn new skills, almost without realising – young minds get fed all the best stuff.
The never-ending adventure starts here.

Uniform
Squirrels uniform consists of a red sweatshirt with your badges sewn on and a coloured scarf or ‘necker’ to represent your local group. There are lots of other optional accessories you can wear such as hats, hoodies, navy blue trousers or shorts, if you’d like to.
Wearing a uniform is comfy and practical. It means you can run around and get messy without ruining your other clothes. It makes you feel part of a team. It means no one feels uncomfortable or left out. And it gives you a place to show off all the brilliant badges you earn.
You can often buy uniforms at local School Uniform shops or you can get it from the Official Scout Store.
Badges and Placement
From your very first day at Squirrels to your last day at Explorers, being a Scout is all about trying new things. You can work towards as many badges as you like, at your own pace.
Each award is packed with awe and awesome, perfect for anyone who’s ever asked ‘Why?’ (or ‘Why not?’). You’ll think about what makes you unique and learn to be the best friend you can be, enjoy your first campfire and meet some new people.
It gives our Squirrels lots of things to do while they work towards the top award – the Chief Scout’s Acorn Award.
The Squirrel Scout Promise
The Promise is an important part of Scouting. It reminds us how we should act, no matter what age we are or what we believe in.
Learn about moving on to Beavers with the Moving On song.
Moving On to Beavers
When your Squirrel has visited every leaf, it won’t be the end of an adventure but the start of a new one! At 6 years old your Squirrel can Move On to Beavers for the next stage in their Scouting adventure.
This can be a really exciting time but also can be a bit sad, and that alright! This is an understandable reaction to change so it’s okay for your Squirrel to feel nervous and unsure.
That’s why we help you as much as we can with Moving On to Beavers. We have the Moving On Award that means that your Squirrel can keep their routine at Squirrels but also try Beavers at the same time! This is normally for about 3 weeks when you and your Squirrel Leader thinks you are ready to Move On.
We also know that some Squirrels find it harder than others. If your Squirrel needs extra time, don’t worry, the moving on period is flexible to you and your Squirrel’s needs so ask your Squirrel leader for some time to discuss how best to Move On to Beavers.
